It say they will keep the remaining 165 Grammar schools open.

Another example of BBC selective reporting. Desgined, no doubt, to cause as much trouble as possible amongst Conservative supporters. Widen your news info sources, the BBC is one very narrow band of opinion.

Grammar schools have been on the decline for 40 years, under Labour and Conservative governments. They exist in mainly affluent, thinly populated areas who can still afford to support that system. In post-war baby boom, when children numbers increased significantly it became too expensive for most areas to finance that system. It is a lot cheaper to lump them in under one Comprehensive roof than have three different schools to pay for. That is why Margaret Thatcher expanded the system when she was Education sec in Heath's government. Clinging to an old and mainly impractical ideal is pointless if they will not be able to actually implement it anyway.
The problems with education are more to do with the quality of teaching and poor parenting.
